Petticoat

Petticoat

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

This petticoat belonged to Amelia Beard Hollenback (1844-1918) who was born and raised in Brooklyn and would eventually marry the prominent financier and philanthropist John Welles Hollenback (1835-1927) in 1874. Following the voluminous skirt silhouette of the period, the touch of embroidery and pintucking at the hem illustrates a great attention to detail in the event that the petticoat edge would have been seen.
