Paul Laurence Dunbar's (1872-1906) thoughtful gaze would have been well-known to those around him. He wrote poetry at a young age and became known for writing in the Black dialect of his time. The oak leaves represent his first book of poetry, Oak and Ivy, which contained many poems that discussed racial prejudice.
