The arms on this dish are those of James, fifth duke of Hamilton (1702/3–1743), and it is possible that this dish is part of a large service created for him at the time of his marriage to his third wife in 1737.

The fifty thousand objects in the Museum's comprehensive and historically important collection of European sculpture and decorative arts reflect the development of a number of art forms in Western European countries from the early fifteenth through the early twentieth century.
