The object is a fragment of a watchcase cover; the image was taken from an uillustration by Bernard Salomon (ca. 1508–ca. 1561) for an edition of the Latin poet Ovid's Metamorphoses, first published in Lyon by Jean de Tournes in 1559.

The fifty thousand objects in the Museum's comprehensive and historically important collection of European sculpture and decorative arts reflect the development of a number of art forms in Western European countries from the early fifteenth through the early twentieth century.
