Seated Ptah

Seated Ptah

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

The figure's cap is missing, but even so the god Ptah is identifiable by the insignia he holds, the raised rim of his garment in back, and the counterpose hanging behind his necklace. Ptah's neck is thrust slightly forward. His features, as far as discernable beneath the corrosion are unusual, the eyes large and the lips full and sinuous. He appears to date earlier than the Late Period, but it is difficult to pin down how much earlier.

The Met collection of ancient Egyptian art consists of approximately 30,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural importance, dating from about 300,000 BCE to the 4th century CE. A signifcant percentage of the collection is derived from the Museum's three decades of archaeological work in Egypt, initiated in 1906 in response to increasing interest in the culture of ancient Egypt.
