Mask of Iineferty

This elegant mask of cartonnage was placed over the head of Iineferty's mummy. She is shown wearing a long braided wig with decorative bands just below chin level and a floral fillet surmounted by a lotus blossom, symbolic of rebirth. Her face is framed by separate locks of hair that end in thin pigtails, characteristic of the late 18th and 19th Dynasties. The lower part of the mask takes the shape of a floral collar that would have fit over Iineferty's shoulders. The Met collection of ancient Egyptian art consists of approximately 30,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural importance, dating from about 300,000 BCE to the 4th century CE. A signifcant percentage of the collection is derived from the Museum's three decades of archaeological work in Egypt, initiated in 1906 in response to increasing interest in the culture of ancient Egypt.
