This unusually shaped loaf of bread was found in a basket of food (36.3.57) that had been placed in the tomb of Hatnefer (36.3.1). Two other fragmentary loaves of similar shape were also found in the basket. There were also other, more conventional loaves (36.3.73, 36.3.74, 36.3.78), raisins (36.3.65), and dates (36.3.66).

The Met collection of ancient Egyptian art consists of approximately 30,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural importance, dating from about 300,000 BCE to the 4th century CE. A signifcant percentage of the collection is derived from the Museum's three decades of archaeological work in Egypt, initiated in 1906 in response to increasing interest in the culture of ancient Egypt.
