An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

Found on the head of a woman in a Roman Period burial excavated and recorded by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition, the red cap (25.3.217a) and two brown caps (25.3.217b and c) are rare datable examples of headwear. Draw strings served to tighten the red cap. All three were found one on top of the other over two layers of cloth, one of which is 25.3.218, wrapped turbanlike about the head of the mummy.

The Met collection of ancient Egyptian art consists of approximately 30,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural importance, dating from about 300,000 BCE to the 4th century CE. A signifcant percentage of the collection is derived from the Museum's three decades of archaeological work in Egypt, initiated in 1906 in response to increasing interest in the culture of ancient Egypt.
