Bust of a Revered Person

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

During the Ramesside Period busts of family ancestors were set into niches in the walls of houses of the village of Deir el Medina, or placed in tombs in the cemeteries there. They have also been found at other sites such as Abydos. This example is unusual because of its large size, well carved facial features and elaborate painted decoration, which is exceptionally well preserved.

The Met collection of ancient Egyptian art consists of approximately 30,000 objects of artistic, historical, and cultural importance, dating from about 300,000 BCE to the 4th century CE. A signifcant percentage of the collection is derived from the Museum's three decades of archaeological work in Egypt, initiated in 1906 in response to increasing interest in the culture of ancient Egypt.
