Parasol
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
The lace seen here is created specifically for the parasol cover format with eight spokes coming out from the center, corresponding to the ribs of the parasol. Each of the eight sections has an identical symmetrical design. This would have been a highly prized possession and on the parasol it was loosely tacked in one place at each rib. The loose attachment clearly made it removable from the parasol, possibly to interchange with different covers.
