Fan
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
Good example of a finely detailed bible narrative; serves a dual purpose of having a religious basis but also an event taking place in a very exotic land where there is opportunity to illustrate elaborate clothing, entrancing architecture and monuments of Egypt This fan is from the collection of Mary Walters Arents, wife of George Arents, one of the founders of the American Tobacco company. The Arentses also collected academic art which shares similar imagery, style and aesthetic as the fans they collected.
