Hat

Hat

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

Extant examples of children's clothing are fairly rare, especially headwear. As was common at the time, this hat follows the lines of women's headwear styles. Day bonnets were often ornamented with various types of materials to add texture and interest, as seen here with the braid arranged in an undulating pattern and the silk gathered into a ribbon on the side. These types of decorations provided variety from the plainer dress of the period.
