Berthe
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
Amelia Beard Hollenback (1844-1918) was the wife of prominent financier and philanthropist John Welles Hollenback (1835-1927). In 1874, the Hollenback family settled in the neighborhood of Clinton Hill in Brooklyn. At that time, Brooklyn was a metropolitan center with numerous affluent neighborhoods and a thriving downtown shopping district. Purchased at Balch, Price & Co., one of the most exclusive specialty department stores of the time, the rich variety and manipulations of materials in this charming 1889 winter bonnet is exemplary of the great Paris milliner, Berthe.
