Wedding slippers

Wedding slippers

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

Flat slippers in white satin were the most popular evening and formal shoe for women throughout the first half of the 19th century, although the details of cut, shape, and decoration changed over time. This pair of slippers displays the wide square toe popular around 1840, and features a particularly attractive large ribbon and lace bow centered with a silk-wrapped button, also typical of the period.
