Handkerchief
Catherine Hubert
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
An accomplished young woman of the early 19th century was expected to master many types of needlework. This handerchief, made by Miss Catherine Hubert (1799-1898) when she was about 20 years old, presents intricate embroidery, drawn work and cut work as well as handmade lace. A handsome piece, it is remarkable not only for its workmanship but as a document of women's work of that period in general and of one individual in particular.
