Handkerchief

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Diamond Jubilee was a significant moment in the reign of Queen Victoria, celebrating 60 years of her reign. This handkerchief summarizes in its imagery the many remarkable industrial and territorial conquests made during that time. These triumphs include the printing machine that could make 50,000 copies per hour; advances in machine loom weaving; the ability to send telegrams at 100 miles per minute; production of the maxim gun, allowing 600 shots per minute; the West Coast railway's corridor train's ability to travel 60 miles per hour; and the ability to travel across the Atlantic in just 5 1/2 days. During this time, the British Empire was strong, powerful and a force not to be reckoned with.
