Handkerchief

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

The nearly transparent woven pineapple cloth that comprises this handkerchief contains supplementary woven motifs at the corners that are echoed by the intricately detailed and finely cut muslin appliqué border. The cutwork appliqué seen here is very specific to the Philippines. Known as sombrado technique, it is highly painstaking and difficult work and is done on only the finest pieces of pineapple cloth accessories and garments
