Gloves
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
The embroidered figure on these gloves is a lady in court dress complete with the fontanges, the hairstyle in vogue during the first decade of the eighteenth century. It is unusual to find a historical costume depicted on a fashionable accessory. It must have amused the lady who wore the gloves to compare the style of her grandmother’s day to the attire of her own time.
