Kimono with Design of Lilies, Chinese Bellflowers, and Pinks

Kimono with Design of Lilies, Chinese Bellflowers, and Pinks

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

This light brown, crepe silk summer kimono has woven diagonal fret patterns; lilies, Chinese bellflowers, and pinks are hand-painted on the lower half of the front panels. The summer flowers are of pastel colors, white, light green, yellow and blue. The outlines of the flowers are emphasized in stronger lines and tones, while the inner sections of the petals are almost translucent, allowing the underlying fret pattern to show through. The design is concentrated on the front of the kimono, while the back is left without additional painted patterns.
