Spring Farming Scene

Katsushika Isai

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

Because of the poor condition of this fan—the edges frayed and the ivory ribs broken into pieces—the paintings on the two sides were recently separated, trimmed, and remounted as two hanging scrolls. Although neither signature nor seal is found on them, the paintings are unmistakably by Isai, the artist of the fan Winter Farming Scene.
