Bo (written with a different character from that for "cymbals") is a term for bells with suspension loops on the top. Bronze Age examples were lentoid in cross section and capable of producing two tones. The knowledge of the shape and function of the Shang and Zhou bells was lost in later periods, and the barrel-shaped bells made for ritual music in the Qing dynasty intone only one note, as is the case with this bell.
