Geisha Walking through the Snow at Night
Kitagawa Utamaro
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
A geisha walks with an umbrella in a snowstorm, accompanied by a male attendant carrying a lantern and a lacquered black box containing her musical instrument, a shamisen. It is a dreamlike scene. The snow is falling thick and fast, but there is no indication of snow on the ground. Utamaro, a prolific ukiyo-e artist, specialized in vivid depictions of graceful, attractive women.
