Utagawa Kunimasa V (Baidō Kokunimasa)

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

This triptych, which shows the emperor in a horse-drawn carriage reviewing troops, combines a variety of nationalist emblems. Lofty Mount Fuji in the background is set off by a middleground of lozenge-shaped pink and purple clouds and a display of imperial Japanese flags.
