The Kabuki Actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V

The Kabuki Actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V

Katsukawa Shunshō 勝川春章

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

In this print, the fifth Ichikawa Danjūrō strikes a serious pose and looks at his reflection in a water basin. The later handwritten inscription identifies the figure as Danjūrō VI, who died at age twenty-two in May 1799, but most likely it is Danjūrō V.
