The casual form and freely applied decoration found on this early type of tea ware reflect the taste of the tea masters who commissioned them. While the ceramic knobs or "buttons" on the exterior of the rim probably served a practical function in the handling of the object, their aesthetic qualities, along with the rough texture and thick glaze, were greatly valued in the ritual tea ceremony.
