Amida Nyorai
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
The scale of gilt bronze images such as this made them ideal for expressions of personal devotion. Worshippers carried these sculptures in portable shrines called zushi. Although its base is a later addition, the figure has survived in extraordinarily good condition because of this original display environment.
