Wan Yannian
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
This is a rare example of Chinese painted enamel that bears its maker’s mark. Written in an archaic seal script, the mark on the bottom reads “made by Wan Yannian.” Historical documents tell us little about this artist or his workshop, but based on the style of his other pieces, the metalworker was likely active in the Canton area during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
