The knickknack peddler is one of the most popular subjects in Chinese figural painting. These works feature meticulously rendered details of the various goods offered by the peddler and the facial expressions of the children surrounding him. Here, the vendor carries two baskets full of household utensils, drinks, medical aids, and toys. Four children follow their mother, hoping to claim their treats.
