Nanda and Vasudeva: Page from a Dispersed Bhagavata Purana (Ancient Stories of Lord Vishnu)
Master of the Dispersed Bhagavata Purana
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
Nanda, Krishna's foster father, affectionately embraces Vasudeva, Krishna's father and brother-in-law of the evil King Kamsa who threatened to kill the infant Krishna. Farmer’s wagons and a lotus-filled tank occupy the lower registers. The strong but limited palette with robust patterning and confident silhouetting of the figures are features of this early sixteenth-century Rajput style.
