Handle fragment (?)

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

The surface of this ivory fragment, depicting a masklike human face at its center, is also enlivened with finely engraved circles, ovoid shapes, and lines. It may have been part of a pail or bag handle, or a plaque attached to a skin boat.
