General George B. McClellan

John Quincy Adams Ward

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

This bas-relief equestrian portrait depicts General George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885), Union general and unsuccessful Democratic Party candidate for President in 1864. McClellan is attired in “undress regulation coat, belt, gauntlets and high riding boots, worn outside the pantaloons” as described in the patent application of January 15, 1864. The relief was designed by illustrator F. O. C. Darley and translated into sculptural form by Ward. Ward issued this relief commercially as a collectible for the Election of 1864, with examples available in silver and bronze in accompanying frames.
