Farny created peaceful, elegiac scenes of Native Americans engaged in everyday rituals, always in harmony with their natural environment. Using clothing, artifacts, and sketches collected from his western trips between 1881 and 1894, the Cincinnati-based artist focused on motifs representing Indigenous customs from the years before Euro-American settlement and native relocation onto government reservations. In "A Successful Hunt," Farny presents a late-afternoon return from the daily work of seeking sustenance, with particular attention to the diverse effects of natural light on the Rocky Mountain landscape.

The American Wing's ever-evolving collection comprises some 20,000 works of art by African American, Euro American, Latin American, and Native American men and women. Ranging from the colonial to early-modern periods, the holdings include painting, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative arts—including furniture, textiles, ceramics, glass, silver, metalwork, jewelry, basketry, quill and bead embroidery—as well as historical interiors and architectural fragments.
