The sitter (1754-1836) was born in Ireland, married Joseph Donaldson in York, Pennsylvania, and later lived in Baltimore. The artist recorded on September 3, 1776: "began a M: of Mrs. Donaldson," and on September 17: "Rd in full of Mr Donalson on his & his Ladys miniature 56 Dollars."
