Peale painted this miniature of his first wife and another version just after her death. Both are based on an earlier, unlocated oil painting from 1771. Rachel Brewer (1744-1790) bore Peale eleven children, including the artists Raphaelle (q.v.), Rembrandt (1778-1860), and Rubens (1784-1865).
