Urn

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

One of a pair of vases that feature two views of New York City copied from a portfolio of prints entitled "Views in New York and Its Environs" (1831–34). In an unusual departure, this vase depicts a building interior, that of the Merchant's Exchange on Wall Street, the center of commerce in what was quickly becoming the country's major commercial center. The other, entitled "Broadway from the Park," (38.165.35) shows some of lower Broadway's notable buildings, including St. Paul's Chapel and P. T. Barnum's American Museum.
