Folding table

Folding table

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

The heavy balusters and applied bosses on this table may indicate that it was produced en suite with a matching cupboard, since such bold decorative elements were more commonly found on that form. The polygonal frame has a two-part, hinged circular top that opens and rests on the pivot support, or gate. The present grain-painted surface is not original and may date to the eighteenth century.
